Physical gold comes with making charges (8-25% for jewelry), storage risk, and purity concerns. Sovereign Gold Bonds (SGBs), issued by RBI, track gold's price, pay an additional 2.5% annual interest, and are tax-free if held to maturity (8 years).
Gold ETFs and Digital Gold offer more liquidity than SGBs — you can buy and sell any trading day. Gold ETFs trade like stocks with very low fees, while Digital Gold lets you buy tiny amounts but carries a small buy-sell spread.
Most planners suggest keeping gold to 5-10% of your portfolio as a hedge, not a primary wealth-builder. For that allocation, SGBs are usually most efficient if you can hold them; Gold ETFs suit those wanting flexibility.
Tax treatment differs meaningfully across these options: SGB interest is taxable as regular income, but the capital gain on maturity (after 8 years) is completely tax-free — a genuine advantage over physical gold, where capital gains tax applies based on how long you held it, and over Gold ETFs, which are taxed as debt-fund-like gains with no indexation benefit.
Digital Gold, offered through apps like PhonePe or Paytm, deserves one specific caution: unlike SGBs (a direct government liability) or Gold ETFs (regulated, exchange-traded, and audited), digital gold holdings are backed by the private vendor's own vaulted gold and insurance arrangements — there's no equivalent government guarantee. It's a reasonable way to buy small amounts casually, but treat it as a convenience product for tiny sums, not as the core of a serious gold allocation.
SGBs were issued in periodic tranches through early 2024, but the Government of India has not opened a new SGB tranche since February 2024, and no fresh issuance calendar has been announced for FY 2026-27 as of this writing. In practice, this means you can no longer subscribe to a brand-new SGB tranche — the only way to buy one today is on the secondary market (NSE/BSE) via your demat account, at the prevailing market price rather than a fixed issue price.
This secondary-market route also changed tax-wise under Budget 2026: the full tax-free capital gains benefit at maturity now applies strictly to original subscribers who hold to the complete 8-year term. If you buy an existing SGB on the exchange instead, your capital gains on redemption are taxed at a flat 12.5% (no indexation) if held over 12 months, or at your slab rate if sold sooner — only the 2.5% annual interest payout's tax treatment (taxed at your slab rate) remains unchanged for everyone. Check whether a bond you're buying is from an original allotment or a secondary-market purchase before assuming the old tax-free reputation still applies to your specific case.
Bottom line: gold's role in a portfolio is insurance against uncertainty, not a growth engine — treat the 5-10% allocation guideline as a ceiling to respect, not a floor to build toward, and always check which specific gold product (physical, SGB, ETF, or digital) you're actually being offered before assuming its tax and liquidity terms match the SGB reputation most people still associate with "gold investment" in India.
