NRI Corner — Complete Guide

As an NRI, you'll typically need two types of bank accounts. An NRE (Non-Resident External) account holds your foreign earnings converted to rupees — it's fully repatriable (you can move the entire balance back abroad anytime) and the interest earned is completely tax-free in India. An NRO (Non-Resident Ordinary) account holds income earned within India, like rent or dividends — repatriation is limited to $1 million per financial year, and interest is taxable.

NRIs can invest in Indian mutual funds and stocks, subject to FEMA (Foreign Exchange Management Act) regulations, typically through an NRE or NRO-linked demat account. Most major brokers including Zerodha and Groww support NRI accounts, though the account opening process involves additional documentation compared to resident accounts.

Tax filing rules differ meaningfully from resident Indians. NRIs are taxed only on income earned or accrued in India — foreign income is generally not taxable in India (subject to DTAA — Double Taxation Avoidance Agreement — with your country of residence). TDS rates on NRI income are often higher than for residents, making it worth claiming refunds via ITR filing where applicable.

Given the complexity of cross-border tax rules, FEMA compliance, and DTAA provisions that vary by country, it's genuinely worth consulting a CA who specifically handles NRI taxation rather than a general practitioner — the rules are specialized enough that generic advice often misses important nuances specific to your country of residence.
