If you're sending money abroad from India — for a child's education, medical treatment, a family trip, or an investment — a portion of that amount may be collected upfront as Tax Collected at Source (TCS), under Section 206C(1G) of the Income Tax Act. This isn't a new fee on top of your remittance; it's advance tax, deducted by your bank or authorized dealer at the time of transfer, and fully creditable against your total tax liability when you file your return. Understanding exactly when it applies, and at what rate, matters because Budget 2026 changed these rates meaningfully — and a lot of information still online reflects the older, higher rates.

TCS on outward remittance is tied to the Liberalised Remittance Scheme (LRS), an RBI framework that allows resident Indian individuals — including minors, with a guardian's countersignature — to remit up to USD 250,000 per financial year for permitted purposes: education, medical treatment, travel, maintenance of relatives abroad, gifts, and investments. One detail that trips up a lot of people: NRIs cannot use LRS at all — it applies only to resident Indians sending money out of the country, which is the opposite direction of the far larger NRI-to-India remittance flow most people think of when they hear "foreign remittance."

TCS only kicks in once your cumulative LRS remittances in a financial year (April to March) cross ₹10 lakh — this threshold is per PAN, aggregated across every bank and every remittance purpose you use, not a separate ₹10 lakh allowance for each transfer or each bank. Below ₹10 lakh in a year, most remittance purposes attract zero TCS. This threshold itself was raised from ₹7 lakh in Budget 2025, so if you're working from information published before that, the number you're seeing is outdated.

Here is exactly what applies from April 1, 2026, under Budget 2026: education funded through a loan from a specified financial institution carries 0% TCS regardless of amount, as long as the loan qualifies under Section 80E. Self-funded education and medical treatment remittances now attract 2% TCS above the ₹10 lakh threshold — down from 5% before this Budget, a genuine reduction worth knowing about if you're planning either. Overseas tour packages were simplified into a flat 2% TCS on the entire amount, with no ₹10 lakh exemption at all — this replaced the earlier, more confusing 5%/20% split based on amount. Every other LRS purpose — investment abroad, gifting, maintaining a relative overseas — still attracts 20% TCS above ₹10 lakh, unchanged from the October 2023 rate.

The single most important thing to understand about TCS is that it is not money you lose — it is advance tax that shows up in your Form 26AS and gets credited against whatever income tax you actually owe for the year. If your total tax liability is lower than the TCS collected, you get the difference back as a refund when you file your ITR; if you have no tax liability at all, you can claim the entire amount back. Your bank issues a TCS certificate (Form 27D) after the transaction, which is worth keeping alongside your other tax documents for that financial year, even though the credit itself shows up automatically in Form 26AS.

These rules have moved fast enough that it's worth knowing the timeline if you're comparing information from different sources. Before October 2023, most LRS remittances attracted a modest 5% TCS above a ₹7 lakh threshold. October 2023 brought a sharp increase to 20% on most purposes above that same ₹7 lakh mark — a change that caught many remitters off guard. Budget 2025 raised the threshold to ₹10 lakh and introduced the 0% exemption for loan-funded education. Budget 2026, effective this April, is where the education/medical rate dropped to 2% and tour packages were simplified — the version of the rules that actually applies to your remittances today.

Two mistakes come up repeatedly. First, confusing LRS-outward TCS with NRI-inward remittances — they are governed by entirely different rules, and the $135+ billion NRIs send into India every year has nothing to do with the TCS structure described here. Second, assuming international credit card spending while traveling abroad is automatically covered under LRS and subject to TCS — this specific classification has been repeatedly deferred by the government and, as of this Budget, credit card spending abroad still falls outside LRS/TCS entirely, though this is worth re-checking periodically since the deferral has no permanent guarantee attached to it.

If you're planning a remittance under ₹10 lakh for the year, TCS simply won't apply — plan freely. Above that threshold, the purpose of your remittance now matters more than ever for how much gets collected upfront: loan-funded education stays at zero, self-funded education and medical treatment are meaningfully cheaper than they were a year ago at 2%, tour packages are simpler to calculate at a flat 2%, and everything else remains at the same 20% it has been since late 2023. None of this is money lost — treat it as a temporary hold that your ITR will settle, not an actual cost of sending money abroad.

A few specific questions come up often. Does TCS apply if I'm sending money to my own NRE/NRO account? No — LRS and its TCS apply to sending money out of India to foreign accounts or foreign parties, not to your own NRI banking arrangements. Does the ₹10 lakh threshold reset if I switch banks mid-year? No — it's tracked per PAN across all authorized dealers, so switching banks doesn't give you a fresh threshold. Does TCS apply only to one large transfer, or does it add up across multiple smaller ones? Either way — TCS applies the moment your cumulative remittances for the financial year cross ₹10 lakh, whether that's from one transfer or many.
